Every year we do a summer exchange to Esteli, in the northern mountainous region of Nicaragua. The aim of this trip is to exchange culture, experiencing the Nicaraguan way of life whilst teaching the English culture (i.e. lack of dancing ability), you will be teaching English (no experience required) and getting involved with cultural activities such as mural painting, dancing, sport, music and more. We normally start recruitment at the Sheffield University Freshers’ fair and open for applications in October, interviews in December and confirming places in January.
Post exchange travelling: Freddie went on the 2013 trip and for him, it was genuinely life changing; after teaching, Oli (Recruitment officer), Sam (SES Liaison) and Freddie cycled from Esteli in the north to San Juan Del Sur, a beautiful beach in the southern tip of Nicaragua. There is a few seconds of footage of this trip in the video below (look out for us on bikes, or pondering at the top of a mountain we have just climbed. If you go on this trip this year he would highly recommend doing a similar adventure. Since the 2013 group the majority of our members go travelling afterwards, around Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Corn Islands and other locations around Central America – why not ask committee about their previous adventures?!
